Rings and things…
Making jewellery has always been a passion for Karin Rae Matthee. ‘My Dad made jewellery as a hobby and he first taught me to saw metal at the age of ten.’ After school she studied jewellery design at Stellenbosch University and in 2010 she started her brand, Dear Rae Jewellery. With a focus on natural lines and simplistic forms, her everyday pieces celebrate the beauty and ease of simplicity and translate into functional jewellery. Karin has a penchant for gold, silver, brass and copper and throws in the occasional gemstone to boot.
In 2011 Morgan Xekethwana joined Karin at Dear Rae and has since specialised in the manufacturing of various Dear Rae rings, pendants and bangles. This year Raymond Kama joined the team and has also learnt many skills in manufacturing jewellery.
The Dear Rae team is currently working on a new range of rings and pendants for Summer. The Cape Town team will be bringing a collection of brass, silver and spots of colour to the Sanlam Investments FoodWineDesign Fair this year and are particularly excited to be spending time with ‘the open and friendly people of Joburg’.
